Checklist: Moving house

Prepare yourself for moving day with our handy moving checklist! We've broken down the tasks into manageable pieces to help you check things off as you go. 

1 MONTH PRIOR

• Collect packing materials and begin packing, remembering to label boxes and safely store fixings from dismantled furniture. 
• Organise a skip bin if you're cleaning out whilst you pack
• Book removalists
• Check your internet connection - if it's a new home, you'll need to organise NBN connection which can take a few weeks to connect

1-2 WEEKS PRIOR

• Order your council bins
• Consider if you need a baby or pet sitter for moving day
• Set up postal redirection
• Get household insurance
• Connect your utilities like gas and electricity and services like Foxtel and your internet service provider. At the same time, organise the disconnection of utilities at your current address.
• Check council requirements for keeping pets

WEEK OF MOVING

• Update all of your addresses
• Make a list of essentials that you need on the first you move in and pack these separately
• It's also a good idea to keep any valuable items with you rather than with the removalists
• Meet the neighbours
• Gather together all the keys (windows, doors, gates) and any remotes for handover day
• Like the keys, if you have an user guides or warranties on ovens or security systems for example, gather this together for the new owner.
